Our Hospital

About Us

Carroll Veterinary Clinic was founded in 1984 by Dr. H. G. Mark Strauss, a veterinarian who fell in love with the local community, its pets, and pet owners. Two years later, Dr. Strauss was joined by Dr. Jim Adams, a DVM who shared his passion for the area and for caring for animals. Together, the two veterinarians started Foothills Pet Healthcare Clinic in 1999 to expand their practice and bring their solutions-oriented care to pets and pet owners in the Mount Airy region.

Over the years, the two practices have attracted and maintained many loyal clients from a large geographic area. Thanks to the support of these clients and the growth of the practices, our doctors were able to build a new facility for Foothills Pet Healthcare Clinic in 2003. The facility so enhanced the veterinary experience for our clients and patients that a nearly identical facility was constructed for Carroll Veterinary Clinic in 2005. The buildings allow our veterinarians to practice quality small animal medicine and surgery in a pleasant environment that comforts and fully accommodates pets and their owners.

About Our Veterinary Doctors and Staff

Most of our DVM’s began their careers in mixed animal practices, and our animal clinics focused on larger animals in their early years. As the needs of our local communities have changed, our focus has shifted to small animal care, including dogs, cats, pocket pets, and goats.

Our pet patients benefit from additional expertise in areas such as new puppy care, orthopedic surgery, animal behavior, internal medicine, pet skin care, and cat and kitten conditions. No matter what your pet’s health care needs, you will find all four of our veterinarians share a great enthusiasm for their chosen profession and a dedication to treating each pet and pet owner as an individual with unique needs. Learn more about our veterinarians.

Community Support

Carroll Veterinary Clinic strive to make a difference in our communities by working closely with our local humane societies and rescue groups. In conjunction with the Twin County Humane Society, we have developed a feral cat program to provide very low cost spays and neuters to help reduce the population of “unhomed” cats. We provide discounted spays, neuters, and other medical services to dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies adopted or rescued from local humane organizations. Contact us for additional information.

We are also committed to supporting students considering a career in the veterinary field. Our practices believe in the value and importance of high school internship programs and we host interns from the Southwest Virginia Governors School, local high schools, colleges, and veterinary schools across the southeast. We have been recognized on a state and national basis in both Virginia and North Carolina for our efforts.
